Combating trafficking in persons in Turkmenistan: Prevention, Protection and NGO capacity Building (2009-2012)

Training eventThe project goal is to contribute to combating trafficking in persons in Turkmenistan by strengthening local NGOs and national assistance to VoTs. It will assist in the creation of strong NGO network to provide assistance to Victims of Trafficking (VoT) through reintegration and rehabilitation activities. The project encompasses a number of tasks that will be implemented, such as the establishment of the «Rehabilitation center» for the Victims of Trafficking, develop of capacitates of local NGOs in the process of rehabilitation, reintegration and identification of VoTs in the country. Among other tasks and objectives, the establishment of the nationwide hotline will be an essential component of the project. Information dissemination component will be a pillar of the project and will contribute to identification of the local VoTs, will increase public awareness as well as will prevent potential beneficiaries from the risk of being trafficked, thus decreases the vulnerability of country’s population.

IOM Central Asia Regional Counter-Trafficking Project, including Turkmenistan (2010-2013)

Training eventThe project aims to contribute to the efforts of the Central Asian Republics in addressing human trafficking by focusing on prevention and protection. With the new slogan, «Beware of Human Trafficking! Let’s Stop Trafficking!» the information campaigns will not only raise public awareness but also engage and mobilize the public in the fight against trafficking. The protection component of the project centers on the provision of appropriate direct assistance — including medical, psychosocial, and legal — and of voluntary, dignified, and safe return to the victims of trafficking. In Turkmenistan, IOM will collaborate closely with nongovernmental organizations in holding gender-mainstreamed prevention activities, such as information campaigns, and training and educational events. Special attention will be paid to expanding the network of counter-trafficking nongovernmental partners and opening a new hotline office in Turkmenabad city, while continuing to provide comprehensive protection services to victims of trafficking.

Combating trafficking in persons in Turkmenistan: capacity building of Law Enforcement officers and involved government agencies (2009-2011)

Training eventThe project aims to contribute to combating trafficking in persons in Turkmenistan, through awareness raising and capacity building activities. Within the framework of the project, IOM’s counter-trafficking activities will be focused on law enforcement cooperation and capacity building by dissemination of information and organizing training on anti-trafficking legislation as well as on the effective methods to combat the phenomenon of trafficking based on international experience and best practices. The project also proposes to organize a study tour for relevant government agencies to Turkey followed by the establishment of a network and database between these participating government agencies in Turkmenistan.

Combating trafficking in persons in Turkmenistan (2008-2009)

Training eventThe project aims to contribute to combating trafficking in persons in Turkmenistan, through prevention, protection and capacity building activities. This project will be follow up of a previous regional project financed by MFA Norway and completed in 2007. Within the frame of a new project, IOM will continue to cooperate with NGOs in Turkmenistan which will disseminate information on the risks of human trafficking and illegal migration in their respective cities, organize and facilitate trainings with target populations, and provide direct assistance to victims of trafficking.

IOM also will continue to assist the Government of Turkmenistan in enhancing legislation related to combating trafficking in human beings, in developing the skills of law enforcement officials for effective investigation and prosecution of crimes related to human trafficking, and in establishing a training framework for relevant state authorities.

Combating Trafficking in Persons in Central Asia: Prevention, Protection and Capacity Building (2006-2007)

Children Art ExhibitionThe project aims to contribute to combating trafficking in persons in Central Asia, through prevention, protection and capacity building activities. This project will comprise four country programs — in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan — where prevention, protection and capacity building activities will be implemented. Project activities in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan will focus on training government officials and support to NGOs, the Turkmen project component will attempt a broader range of activities.
